(More customer reviews)The claw is the main attraction of Diesel 10. In this toy it only slides forward and back - there is no up or down movement and the claw jaws do not open and close. This is a huge drawback because that's why the kids love Diesel 10. My 3 year old plays with it, but not to the extent he would be if it could do more. Remember, this toy is only a few inches long. It fit the track system, but I think my son would have been happier with a different character - it was VERY anticlimactic to have a non-functioning claw.

Thomas And Friends Wooden Railway - Emily Review

(More customer reviews)If your child enjoys acting out the Thomas & Friends series, then they should know that Emily is one of the friendlier engines. She is an old-fashioned engine, with large inner wheels. She is the first female steam engine, apart from Lady, who only appeared in the Thomas & The Magic Railroad movie. She was given 2 green coaches after saving Oliver and Toad when they were stuck on the tracks. Before she had her coaches, she borrowed Annie and Clarabelle from Thomas, which made all the other engines sad.
Emily was just released last year in "Emily's New Coaches" and already, she has a major role, mainly because Thomas & Friends doesn't show female engines very often. I have recommended that Learning Curve sells Emily's coaches, because I don't think Thomas will approve of Emily always taking Annie & Clarabelle!

(More customer reviews)If your child enjoys acting out the Thomas & Friends episodes, Duck is one of the more sensible engines. He is a big green tank engine with the GWR logo on the sides. He stands no nonsense from the engines and freight cars who try to boss him around, and does things his own way--the Great Western way. Unfortunately, sometimes the freight cars get the best of him, especially when they make him crash through a barber shop in "A Close Shave For Duck."
If you could use a sensible engine in your layout, then Duck is for you. Don't worry if he's accident-prone, though. You could always get an engine that will tow him back into place. Then, Duck will be ready to work the Great Western way again.

This is a great product. Very well-constructed. Very durable. It can be switched on, go forward or backward, and it can be pushed manually--another reviewer complained that it could not be pushed, but it can be pushed.
Purchasing recommendation:
* Wait until appropriate age: Our son started with Thomas when he was 18 months old, but we did not buy any battery engines until he was 3. We wanted for him to use his imagination in pushing and pulling for a while. Now he sometimes sits back and just watches the battery engines, while at other times he pushes them.
* The metal engines are more durable: The metal engines cost more than the larger plastic battery-operated engines, but they are far more durable. They feel solid in the hand. They go both forward and backwards, while the plastic engines only go forward. They pull the wooden cars that your child may already have. They're just a better fit!

(More customer reviews)How can one have Thomas and not Annie and Clarabel. Thomas can only be so useful without these charming companions. I mean where will the passengers sit? Who will coach Thomas around that fast and dangerous corner? And who will admonish Thomas when he becomes too cheeky?
To be more serious, I was not at all sure what my son (just turned 3) would think about the addition of these ladies, but now I can't imagine how he would play without them. He just adores Annie and Clarabel and everywhere Thomas goes, they are sure to follow. Which means that the trio accompany him into the sand box and into the bath tub.
Very rugged toys, I highly recommend these two gals to keep Thomas company.

Annie and Clarabel are Thomas' two faithful coaches. They were given to Thomas as a reward for proving himself to be a Really Useful Engine. Annie carries passengers and is always pulled by Thomas facing him. Clarabel carries both passengers and luggage, and always travels behind Annie.
