Being a fan of the Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis, this is another Motormax replica I had to add to my collection. It features opening front doors, opening hood and steerable wheels. This replica is just slightly nicer in some of its details than Motormax's earlier Crown Victoria (which I also reviewed). The grille accurately simulates the honeycomb pattern of the real car and the blue Ford oval in it is nicely done. The headlights and tail lights are well done, too. The proportions of this replica appear to be perfect to my eyes. The wheels look neat, but they don't replicate any wheel style I've ever seen on a real Crown Victoria. Unlike Motormax's earlier Crown Victoria, the front window frames are cast into the doors, so in comparison it looks much more realistic when the doors are open. The underhood detail is a little generic looking and the engine appears slightly offset; the chassis detail is just a little better and even includes the "dimple" in the transmission pan and the ribbed pattern on the mufflers (I'm again comparing it to a real car, in this case, my 2004 Grand Marquis, which is basically identical to this car). There's still room for improvement though. The steering wheel is rotated 180 degrees opposite what it should be-not unique to this example, either; all of these replicas appear to be made that way. A peculiar inaccuracy is that it has a column shift lever in addition to a console shift lever! The quality isn't exactly consistent from one example to the next. An opening trunk would be nice, but I suppose it would only add to the cost.
This replica is also made as a taxicab, Arizona Highway Patrol car, U.S. Border Patrol car, San Bernadino County Sheriff and Vancouver Police, among others. I have these as well; the graphics appear accurate, but aren't always evenly applied, i.e. they're sometimes slightly crooked. These have different wheel styles, too-most with simulated steel rims (GM style, unfortunately), others with more accurate replicas of Ford's 10 slot plastic wheel covers, though finished in chrome rather than silver like the real ones. And the others have different interior accessories, depending on the version.
In summary: While not perfect, it's still a nice replica worthy of a place in your collection. And keep in mind, my opinion is from an adult collector's perspective; most kids won't care about any of it's shortcomings.
