(More customer reviews)Do not buy the Discovery Planet microsope for your child. My husband bought one of these for our kids, and my brother bought one for our nephews. They both were dismal failures. The mechanism for focusing is very sticky so that you really can't focus at all, and the optics are quite poor, so that you end up with rainbow effects across anything you want to view. With this microcope, no child can ever get a decent image. An adult, with greater manual dexterity and about 30 min of effort, can get a little better focus, but still extremely poor. Our kids were completely frustrated and now basically feel that microscopes are boring. To make it look like you're getting a deal, the manufacturer includes a bunch of doodads in the "set," a few of which (like the prepared specimens) might be useful if the microscope focused, but many of which are just useless padding. The fundamental purpose of a microscope is to magnify objects clearly; if it doesn't do that, it is nothing. This scope, unfortunately, is an example of cheap manufacture which just doesn't serve its purpose at all. Please don't waste your money and disappoint your kids.
