Transformers Optimus Prime 20th Anniversary Figure Review

(More customer reviews)First, let me just say that this is by far the coolest transformer ever made.
It's a little difficult to transform at first (because you're afraid of breaking something). It doesn't break easily, however. Most parts are designed to come off and then snap right back on. While this is a good idea, the only draw back to this is that some things come off too easily. Such as, for instance, the feet.
Here's a tip I got from someone else that works well if the joints (in this or any transformer) get too loose. Use clear nail polish on the inside of the joint, wait for it to dry and then put the leg/arm/foot etc. back on. It works really well. For the first time in years, my Grimlock stands properly. Woo-hoo.
A few comments about the two versions of this:
The one shown here is the Hasbro version. The other is the Japanese Takara version. The differences are that the Hasbro one has shorter smoke stacks, battle damage, and a black gun. The takara version has longer smoke stacks, no battle damage, and a grey gun. It also costs about $25 more than the U.S. Hasbro version.
Sounds like the Takara version should be better, right? Actually it isn't. I have them both, of course. When I first got the Hasbro version I didn't like the battle damage and wanted one without it. Now that I have one without battle damage, I have to say it looks more like plastic in certain areas, namely the shoulders, rists and knee joints in particular. The battle damage actually makes the Hasbro version look less like plastic.
The longer smoke stacks are definitely better, but the grey gun is a bummer. Don't these people know that Optimus has a BLACK gun, LONG smoke stacks, and is played by PETER CULLEN? Without those things, it's just not Optimus. (Do you know why he didn't do the voice of Optimus in Armada? Because they didn't ask him. Can you believe that?? i figured he just didn't want to do it, but nope. He said it was because they didn't ask him. I hope the people making the live action movie are listening... GET PETER CULLEN OR WE'RE GONNA RIOT! Get it?)
If you're looking for the Takara version, the U.S. amazon site doesn't have it. It's pretty easy to find with a simple web search, however.
Oh yes, I almost forgot. The Takara version comes with a trailer... sort of. The package folds into a surprisingly real looking trailer. With the exception of the wheels, that is. It's pretty cool, though.
To make a long story short, I think I like the Hasbro version better, despite the dinky smoke stacks.
And also, this is the Optimus that I waited 20 years for. Don't waste any money on the armada or energon toys if you don't have this one yet. If you end up like me, you'll be looking at passing trucks on the highway looking for the old style flat fronted Optimus trucks. Heh heh. Roll out.

Hasbro Transformers Ultimate Bumblebee Figure Review

(More customer reviews)Ultimate Bumblebee is currently available for pre-order, and will be released in September. I decided to preorder my copy a few days ago.
I had a chance to experiment with Bumblebee for a bit, at a toy Fair so I'll review based on my experience. I should note from the beginning, that the picture of Bumblebee on Amazon has been mistransfromed. The chest section separates into three pieces, creating a more streamlined figure. Ultimate Bumblebee stands tall, at 14 inches in height. That's about 2 inches taller than Leader Optimus Prime!
In car mode, the toy accurately represents the Camero. The front doors can open, but unfortunately, there is no interior design. Opening the front doors (with a lot of force) will just lead you to a huge block of plastic, instead of seats, and a steering wheel, which makes the effort quite useless.
In addition to having Transforming capabilities, the toy also has some electronic features. By a push of a button on Bumblebee's chest, the toy can say certain cath phrases, and even play some songs (most noticeably, "Whip it" by Devo). The right arm canon can automatically raise and fire a plastic missile, the head automatically rotates, while the back wings flap by themselves. Bumblebee also reacts to certain environmental noises, such as hand clapping. Yeap, this is a fully automated toy.
As a person who has been collecting Transformers for years, I can honestly say that I'm not sure how to categorize toy. It seems more of an electronic toy than a Transformer.
But, while I'm not a big fan for electronics, I would say that in addition to Bumblebee's car mode, his robot mode is extremely well done (minus the face plate, and lack of a hand on the gun arm). In fact, I believe that the robot mode in Ultimate Bumblebee is more accurate and detailed than the deluxe action figures. That said, if you can afford this version of Bumblebee, definitely make sure to get it.
The toy stands great as a collector's item. Here is the breakthrough of my review:
Design: 4.5/5
EXTREMELY well detailed car and robot mode. The best that I've seen in the current Transformer line. But, having a face plate, and hand on the gun arm, would have made this toy almost perfect.
Possibility: 4/5
Arms can move somewhat, but the electronic mechanism in the shoulder joints, hinders much of the rotation about the ball-sockets.
Electronics: 4.5/5
Cool, yet somewhat annoying after a while. I might take the batteries out after getting this toy.
Overall Score (not an average): 4.5/5
If you don't like electronics - get past that. This is a pretty sweet transformer. Highly detailed. Collectors and fans of the movie will appreciate this toy.

Gort Die-Cast Wind-Up Review

(More customer reviews)I bought 2 of these, one for my husband and one for my 4 year old son. They both love it, but my husband has hidden his from his son for now! My son hasn't broken it, so it seems rather durable. He keeps it in his box and is careful not to misplace the key!

Futurama Super Heavyweights Nickel Plated Bender Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this thinking Bender would be solid die-cast like the similarly-packaged Gort figure was but this is not the case. This figure looks nice but is actually pretty light and is hollow metal. A nice figure still, but when they call it "Super Heavyweight" you really think he'd be solid like the Gort figure (also available as a regular and shiny nickel-plated figure).

Gort Special Edition Nickel Plated Die Cast Figure Review

(More customer reviews)Okay, he's supposed to be 8 feet tall, but this great replica of Gort, the invincible robot policeman from The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) is still impressive at 5". No joints or seams here - just a solid metal figurine plated with nickel. He's heavier than he looks and always surprises guests who pick him up. The only complaint I have is that the finish is shiny and reflective, rather than the dull finish he sported in the movie, but that's actually my fault for not knowing there was already a regular die-cast version without the nickel plating. Still, it's a small complaint for such a great figurine. He comes in a window box with cover flap, enabling easy display without removal, but why wouldn't you want to turn him loose on the public? Just be sure you know the command words in case of emergency...

Bandai Soul of Chogokin Die-Cast Action Figure GX-13 Dancouga Review

(More customer reviews)The Soul of Chogokin Dancouga is a vast improvement from the original Godaikin Dancougar design of the 80s. I have both the original and SoC version, and while I love the original, all the design flaws of the have been corrected and put into proper proportion on this remake (thankfully!). First of all he comes with all the correct weaponry the original lacked. Secondly he is proportionate and actually looks awesome in both separated animals mode AND gestalt mode. The original model was probably the most awkward-looking of all Godaikin gestalts, and too delicate, and this seems to have been an issue seriously taken into consideration when redesigned for SoC series. No longer suffering from giant head and feet syndrome, the SoC Dancouga is a stable yet highly articulated pillar of robotic diecast goodness. Compared to many of the other SoC sets, he is quite large (if not the largest) and VERY heavy. But this is no child's toy...obviously this is a toy made exclusively for the adult collector, as are all the robots in the SoC line. It's durable and stable enough to be gently "played with" and posed much more than a mere model, but it is also highly detailed, as a model would be, and much more detail is bestowed upon this one.
I've seen the price tag on this puppy range everywhere from $189 to $250+, but somewhere around $200 seems to be the norm, and that's quite a bit more than most of the other toys in the same line. That's because this is a large set that comes with all the bells and whistles, and is made of more diecast metal than plastic. It can stand up to be transformed over and over without paint scratching off or wear, even if most collectors probably only transform it once or twice before posing it on a shelf. And it is astonishingly heavy when you pick it up. My one and only complaint is that the head (the eagle) doesn't really snap into its seating very well; in fact it's rather loose. Most of the other SoC toys lock together tightly with magnets, but for some reason Dancouga's head doesn't really snap in like it should. Other than that minor point everything else is perfect...snag one now before they're out of production and no longer available, this is a must-have for chogokin collectors and mecha fans!!

Gort Die-Cast, 5 Inch Review

(More customer reviews)Gort stands exactly five inches tall. His surface is flawless, free of pits and extraneous lines. He has fine detail and weighs exactly 8 oz. The only problem I notice is his falling over often. He needs a wider base to stand in. Other than that I plan to keep him on my desk.

Godzilla MechaGodzilla 12" Classic Figure Review

(More customer reviews)Although there have been Godzilla toys made in the past that were larger than this, they were usually ridiculously expensive resin statues and such best suited for hardcore collectors. Kiryu (aka MechaGodzilla 3) stands a full 12 inches in height, even managing to dwarf the other "12-inch scale" toy in this line, Godzilla 2004.
He's durable, posable in several places, and surprisingly lightweight. The details are excellent and true to how Kiryu appeared in both the movies and the recent video game Godzilla Unleashed (Wii). I heartily recommend this figure - it's the crown jewel of Bandai Creation's USA Godzilla toyline.

Transformers Movie 2 Deluxe Sideswipe Review

(More customer reviews)Sideswipe is one of the hip new autobots who will appear in the Revenge of the Fallen movie. According to the packaging he likes close combat and is a sword expert.
For kids:
This guy is a sweet ride. He's a silver Corvette concept with blue windows and is probably one of the sportiest cars in the line. He transforms fairly easily but has tons of little bits and parts that move and come apart and go together. Because of this he doesn't seem quite as durable to me as some of the others. His swords are one of the coolest "mech-alive" features I've seen yet though and he's got a pretty cool looking robot form. I think he might frustrate younger kids but most kids will like both the car and robot forms.
For adults:
This guy is still a sweet ride. I even want to drive him around and make engine noises. He is painted silver instead of just molded in a certain color and this makes him pop visually. The downside is that over time I see this paint job chipping around the edges and rubbing off on corners. Another down side is because his is an involved transformation and he's such a bright color there are many visible seam lines.
His transformation isn't difficult but it is intricate with many pieces of the body of the car that move and swivel and break apart. He feels a bit delicate but so far has proven durable. Still, if someone went a little nuts on him he might break easy.
Once in robot mode he looks pretty cool with a sleek head, his shoulders that are the rear fenders of the car and a couple of neat points of articulation action. He has pistons and sliding knee covers in his legs that move as you bend it at the knee and he has four hydraulic rods connecting his leg to his body that slide up and down as you move his legs. The rods are a soft material so they won't snap. That's all pretty neat. He does have a bit too much of the car stuck onto his back though to look fully streamlined. But the biggest complaint is his feet. They look fine but the wheels are at bottom (as in his feet don't sit flat on the ground) which makes standing him up a bit of a chore as you have to wiggle him and his feet around to find balance.
His swords are two thin strips of the doors attached to each elbow. The cool part is if you grab one of the two and pull it around in an arc toward the front of his arm the other one swings in the opposite direction automatically via a cool little gear set up. They meet right in front to form the sword on each arm. It's a cool mechanism and works well. Plus you can take the two parts of the sword part way to make double swords or scissor like weapons or half way to make a shield like weapon. It's versatile and can be used to change up the look.
This is a tough one, I'll rate him four but three and a half would be fair too due to his inability to stand well, many seam lines, his chipping paint job and his delicate nature. Then again he looks cool and has those swords...

Futurama Super Heavy Weight Bender Die Cast Metal Figure Review

(More customer reviews)I don't know WHY I expected this to be more rubbery, like a Gumby figurine, but I did. Anyway, this served its purpose. I would suggest one be delicate with it. Just because it's made of metal, doesn't mean parts of it can't come off. I'm especially worried about the beer bottle and the antenna because they look like if you dropped the Bender figurine, those'd be the first to go.
Unrelated matter, the sticker on the bottle keeps coming off. Might need glue.
Recommended use: desk decorations... I take mine everywhere but that's because I feel like if I leave mine at the desk, it'll be swiped.
