When you come to be knowledgeable enough in any field- office supplies, airsoft or paintball equipment, model cars or real ones- you come to know who some of the good, not-so-good, and downright bad manufacturers are. The Road Signatures line from Yat Ming is one of the most impressive I've ever encountered. Their work ranks considerably above the average model from Maisto or whatever they're called now, and it is rather nice in a way that Yat Ming is not some lazy American, British or Italian model car maker but a genuinely Chinese model car maker. It makes a lot more sense that their cars, most of the time, are made in China.
Moving on.
This is an exquisite work, truly. 1:18 scale with metallic gold exterior paint, lots of plastic made to simulate the appearance of chrome, and a simulated black interior, this replica 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado has all you could ask for in such a model besides working head and taillights. The headlights do have some function- a tab on the underside of the car and just aft of the bumper can raise the headlights or retract whatever holds them up, but the headlights must be pushed down by hand. Easy enough to do, and it allows you to display the model with the lights up or down.
So- opening doors, moving headlights, turning tires and steering wheel, and a raisable hood. Those are the functions the model has. The brand and model name is marked as it was on the real car, naturally. Very nicely made and detailed with plenty of miscellaneous functions. And the front wheels do turn, yes.
This is not the kind of model car for anyone who seeks to use it in a more... active role. I have found folks of younger ages to often be smarter than they are given credit for, but there aren't too many very young collectors of more detailed, fragile models. Point being, make sure you or whoever might be getting this model Toronado knows what it is for. Detailed and well-made it is, but it is also easy to break if you try using it as a toy. Toy cars, like those Volkswagen bugs made by Tonka all those years back, are made with less of an eye for detail and more of an eye for durability. This is a model car, and it is not meant for strenuous use.
Lastly, remember that this is a 1:18 scale model- those tend to be a foot long most of the time- of a very large car. I'd say this model of the Toronado is well over 12 inches in length. Not but so compact a model, so keep that in mind as well.
Do I recommend it? Yes. But I'd hate to see someone buy this model expecting one thing and getting something else, so keep all of what I said in mind.
Did you know that the 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado was featured in Quentin Wilson's book, "Great Car"? Now you do. So be happy.
