InAir Sky Champs BF-109 Messerschmitt Review

(More customer reviews)I did not receive the plane pictured - a Sky Champ plane with pull-back action spinning propeller. The plane looked the same, but no pullback stand or propeller mechanism. You can save yourself $4 and get the same type kit by InAir, but have some fun building it by getting the following:

SMITHSONIAN InAir E-Z Build - P51 Mustang Review

(More customer reviews)I picked this up for a 6-year old boy at the Andrew Air Force Base airshow. We were able to mostly assemble it sitting under a tree at the show, while waiting for the line for the buses to queue down. I say mostly because at one piece - part of the tail - was poorly cast and would not fit. The kit came with a small screw driver, so in theory no tools are needed. Once home, I was able to use a knife to make the one piece fit and later cut off a small piece of the landing gear so they better fold up into the wing. While the control surfaces do not move, the prop turns and the landing gear folds up and down. The instructions are drawings, there are no words. No painting or gluing was required.
But for that hassle, the boy plays and plays and plays with it. It has encouraged him to ask many questions about airplanes, how they work and how these planes were used. It has encouraged him to learn more about WWII and history. It has held up well under some pretty rough play.
Additionally, I love the look of the model. It just looks great and seems to be a very nice, for the price, scale model of the Mustang. It would certainly look good on a desk as well.
I would not hesitate to purchase it again.

Unimax Forces of Valor 1:72nd Scale U.S. P-51D Mustang Review

(More customer reviews)My wife picked up one for my four-year-old grandson for Christmas. He loves it and so do I. He knows the P51 from History Channel's Dogfights.BTW, the Amazon site lists the same model for $24.95 and $65.00 (today) depending on vendor. Shop carefully. It is actually better than it looks on the website.
I doubt that anything is durable enough for a four year old, but the construction is quite good, the parts fit nicely, the landing gear retract (with some effort and touch required on the tail gear.) For an adult, it would last a lifetime. He hasn't broken it yet and he hasn't put it down.
My grandson's favorite plane is the Bf (Me)- 109. (They tend to have the most daring and skilled pilots.) I'll have to consider getting a Unimax copy for his birthday.
UPDATE: Two months later, he's turned five, got the Bf-109 for his birthday (also fantastic!) and still hasn't damaged the P51! And he still loves it.

(More customer reviews)Even though a decent value for the money (detail, size), be prepared to "ad-lib" it a bit. Instructions are many times inaccurate and wrong. Put the pieces together first before glueing! Also be prepared to trim a little extra plastic off! But once those things are accomplished, these are decent looking planes.

(More customer reviews)All Maisto Tailwinds models (regardless of which aircraft) are about the same overall size. Some of the ads shown on Amazon for these models are possibly incorrect as far as the "Scale" listed. For instance, if it is a "large" aircraft like a bomber or airliner or something big in real life, there is no way it is going to be 1/87 scale in this diecast model. More like 1/200 scale (at least.) Make sure you look at the DIMENSIONS of the model instead of the scale listed. The dimensions will be shown in the ad. Rely more on the dimensions than what scale is shown in the title or description.

(More customer reviews)Take Note: the picture shows a Wildcat with wartime blue-top, gray-bottom paint and drop tanks...
The model I received had the all-gray with yellow identifying peacetime paint job and drop tanks (which seemed weird...I'd never thought I'd see a pre-war Wildcat F4F-3 with drop tanks, I thought that was a late '42 kinda thing)
Anyways...that's not so important...the model itself, in fact, is VERY well detailed. I'd recommend getting the zero-sen model as well and then just studying the two of them...it's really enlightening!

Smithsonian Museum Replica Series, P-40 Warhawk - 1/48 Scale Review

(More customer reviews)Like most all the other Smitsonian planes, the P-40 is durable, detailed and great as either a toy or for display. Mine had a prop that was slightly loose, but still functioned great and looks good sitting the shelf with the others.
