I collect diecast cars, especially those from the 1950s, and recently purchased this Chinese-made 1950 Ford convertible for my collection. I'd rather this had been 1/24 instead of 1/18 scale (about a foot long) since those fit my display space better. But this nice-looking version of the second year of Ford's first "fenderless" vehicle was the price leader when I went shopping for it.
The craftsmanship is about average for China although the left front door, once opened, does not immediately go back into its appropriate place. A bit of fidgeting gets it there. If you buy this for your child as a toy, and it has this problem, chances are your son or daughter will have the door completely misplaced in the first play session.
For me, it sits on a shelf next to my other diecasts. The two door open, as does the hood to expose Ford's inline engine painted a curious tan color, but the truck does not open. The spare tire on the back tilts backward so you can open the trunk, but I haven't been able to do that.
The paint job is pretty good on this -- brilliant blood red set against all the chrome and the black convertible top that doesn't open or come off. The paint seems thicker than on comparable Chinese products; maybe they used more coats. The packaging for this product ensures that, first, it won't be damaged in shipment and, second, that you'll have a hard time getting it out of the box and off the plastic holder. You'll need a small Philips head screwdriver to do that, too.
So, all things considered, this is about average for collectible toy vehicles from the era. It's a nice looker of questionable construction that should hold up in my house but may not in yours if the kids play with it. For $25, it's a fair buy.
