U.S. S. Navy Nimitz Class CVN-68 1-500 by Trumpeter Review

U.S. S. Navy Nimitz Class CVN-68 1-500 by Trumpeter

After reading Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" for the umpteenth time, I was in the mood to build a Nimitz class aircraft carrier. I saw that Trumpeter made a large scale model of the ship and I excitedly purchased it. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the result.
Although Trumpeter has a good reputation in ship modeling, this particular model is not one of their best. The kit is designed to be motorized and is very toy-like as a result. My particular model was missing the hardware packet that contained the electric motor, wiring, screws, etc., so I was unable to install those parts.
Construction of the model is a bit difficult. It has many ejection pin marks, sink holes and ill-fitting parts. The three-piece flight deck refused to go together without gaps between the sections until I removed the location pins on the rear deck piece and just glued it. The tower is very basic and rather crude. The antennas are crude solid blocks of plastic instead of the wire frame one would expect. The aircraft are crudely molded with many sink marks and poor detail, especially considering the scale at 1:500.
All in all, this model is very much a "toy" and not a "scale model". The details are simplified to make this kit "playable" and it's not really worth the effort to fix all the mistakes and add the detail that is needed for a model this large. This was the first large ship model that I'd built in years and I was very disappointed with it.

1/63 Die-Cast Fokker DR-1, Red Baron Review

1/63 Die-Cast Fokker DR-1, Red Baron
Average Reviews:

I have a new (almost) eight year old son, and he is obsessed with the Red Baron. Unfortunately, the one thing he didn't have was a plane of the Red Baron's, so I decided to order this for him. To say he was excited to receive it, would be an understatement; however, the quality of this toy is HORRIBLE! It was already starting to fall apart when we received it. As soon as he opened it, we found that the wheels had fallen off and needed to be glued back on. Next, the wings started to fall off, so we had to reglue them, but it still kept falling apart. Sadly, there are very few Red Baron planes out there, and most are either kits that need to be put together or are well over [...] and meant for adults to display. He has many die-cast planes that we have had no issues, so I expect a die-cast plane to hold up well. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone, not even an adult.

InAir E-Z Build Model Kit - Fokker Dr.1 Review

InAir E-Z Build Model Kit - Fokker Dr.1

I happened to spot one of these models for sale at the gift shop in the Air and Space museum in San Diego and was struck by the colour, which really did look like the Red Baron Red I grew up reading about. Rightly or wrongly, I remember it have a white cowling like this model, rather than the red cowling often seen, although both might be correct. I didn't buy it at the time, but it stayed in my mind, and I purchased it later through Amazon.
The truly marvelous and remarkable thing about this model is its strength. I had intended to give it to my son when he was older, but it seemed so strudy I gave it to him immediately. He has had it for 5 months, carrying it everywhere, dropping it, playing with it. He just turned two a few days ago, so you can imagine the abuse it has suffered. But, with the exception of the tail, which broke off once, and is now superglued on, it looks brand new and unscathed.
When one considers the price, this is a remarkable model. Authentic AND tough.

Hot Wings F/A-18 Hornet Blue Angels Review

Purchased this for my son who is very in to airplanes. We also got one for his best buddy (both are 3 years old) and they love to "fly" them around on the play ground together and race each other. I love the size of these planes as they are great to travel with, good for restaurants and my son even at times sleeps with his. They are very good quality and a great price too! Great little toy.
